Guatemala is a Central American country with a large indigenous population, the Mayans. They make up 60% of the country's inhabitants and are found everywhere in Guatemala, but mostly in the northern highlands. Each village has its own customs and costumes by which people are identified. There are 20 different Mayan languages (mutually unintelligible) spoken throughout the country, each with many dialects. The Mayans are poor and poorly educated and in the recent past have been victims of genocide. The majority make their living by weaving and are some of the best weavers in Central and South America. Their beautiful woven clothing makes for wonderfully colorful photographs.
